From Snowstorm to Showdown: Battle for the Hilltop Recap
Even during a snowstorm, Hilltoppers still soar! Although this year’s Battle for the Hilltop started a bit rocky with two snow days, students and faculty from the four teams (Boston, Porter, Rowe, Hoffman) still participated in a variety of virtual and creative activities. Many people participated, with over 180 students competing in the “Guess the Faculty Baby Photo” challenge. People also sent in submissions for snow sculptures, photography, and creative writing pieces. By the end of the first day, Team Porter set the pace with 219 points while the other teams were inching toward the 150s.
As students and faculty returned to campus, enthusiasm for the week continued to rise. Many people dressed up for their spirit day themes, with Vacation Day bringing in a wave of bright outfits and beach-inspired getups. Competitions took place throughout the campus and at the Capozzoli Athletic Center. Students and faculty continued participating in a variety of activities, with one highlight being between Aekem Singh and Dr.Kuiper during Brain Games in CCL. The two faced off in an intense match that eventually ended with Aekem winning in overtime. It didn’t stop there; athletic challenges revealed the talents of many students, with Kat Walsh from the Middle School juggling a soccer ball 84 consecutive times, and Jack Houghton winning a checker match in 3 minutes.
Although Team Porter had a commanding lead on the first and second day, by the third day, its lead shrank by 127 points, with only 9 points separating 2nd place (Boston) and 3rd place (Rowe). The competition could’ve still been any team’s game; with that in mind, the Hilltoppers continued to show out in events. One exciting moment from the events came from Nico Romeo during WA’s Strongest Person competition, where he benched 135 pounds 30 times, securing first place in the event. Similarly, team competitions were going strong with Team Boston, with Anthony DeJohn, Cole Blackburn, and Presley Sam earning a victory in the 3-v-3 basketball tournament.
As the 4th day concluded, Team Porter continued to hold its first-place title with a 105-point lead. However, with the highly anticipated Talent Show, Team Color Day, Team Photography, and Team Video, the outcomes for the Battle of the Hilltop were still up in the air, with plenty of opportunities for teams to gain points. As the final day of the Battle for the Hilltop approached, WA’s energy surged once more as students and faculty from all four teams were decked in their team colors and were preparing for the Talent Show.
Finally, with Mr. Plante as our host, the Talent show began with a variety of acts from dancing and singing to instrumental showcases. The performances from all the teams brought out excitement and passion throughout the WA community. Although all the teams put on their best performances, Team Boston delivered the winning performance. However, throughout a week of snow days, spirit contests, athletic, and creative competitions, Team Porter proved that the title for the 2026 Battle for the Hilltop championship was rightfully theirs.
Despite this year’s Battle for the Hilltop beginning on a rocky slope, Worcester Academy students and faculty proved that they would bring in the energy and spirit despite all adversity. Whether it was intense sports competitions or peaceful creative competitions, the WA community put in their best effort and team spirit in everything they did. Although Team Porter won, every team played a major role in making it an exciting and memorable experience.
