How to Stay on Top of Snow Day Work

The snow days have changed over the years, from when we were little kids and could build snowmen or go sledding to the post-COVID years, where work is assigned online. But snow days can still be both relaxing and productive, if you follow a few simple steps.

  1. Make a to-do list

At WA, we are lucky to have MyHilltop, where all of our assignments are posted, but it’s helpful to have them in a regular list form too. This makes it easier for you to keep your priorities straight and stay on task throughout the day. If you make it a checklist, you can satisfyingly cross off assignments when you finish them. And this way you don’t have to worry about the other assignments you have the rest of the week, that you can’t work on that day.

  1. School first, video games later

I know most of you want to consider a snow day as a day off, away from school, and I completely agree. But, on an asynchronous day, we are still getting work posted by our teachers that is important to do. Try getting all the work you have assigned to you before playing video games or doing something else that you normally would do on the weekends. Having everything done will make the stuff you actually want to do so much more rewarding in the end.

  1. Zoom CCLs

Yes, I know that on a day off when you don’t go to school, you really don’t want to have to interact with your teachers. However, this is a perfect opportunity to get some extra help on an assignment or topic you’ve been struggling with. You can join a CCL for a few minutes, ask you questions, and then you’re done. You don’t have to talk to the teacher again that day, and you’re still getting the “hands-on” help that you needed.

  1. Take breaks when you need to

You have the whole day off, so use it. You still should be trying to get some work done, but I understand that when you’re at home and comfortable, that’s hard to do. So, plan breaks between your assignments to recharge your brain. Read a book, scroll on social media for a bit, or maybe watch a short episode of your favorite show. Don’t take too long, though, or you might end up going down a loophole and not getting anything done.

  1. Call your friends

This is a great way to get social interaction and work done at the same time. Say, you and your friend have a quiz tomorrow, and both need to study. Great! Join a FaceTime call and ask each other practice questions. Or if you’re confused about an assignment or something you learned, and they get it, ask them to explain it to you. That way, you’re still doing your homework, but in a way that you enjoy more.

I hope that these tips will help you stay on task and still enjoy your snow day!
