The Power of Poetry: Freshmen Poetry Slam 2025

On Tuesday, October 28th, 2025 the class of 2029 got to showcase their poems in front of their classmates, teachers, and others. The 9th grade poetry slam is a 3 year old, Worcester Academy tradition that allows every 9th grader to present a poem of their choice, as the final for the poetry unit. For the first few months of school the classes studied poetry. Throughout the unit, the students explored different types of poetry such as haiku and sonnets.

Some of the poems presented came from the poetry project, an assignment where the freshman wrote an analysis and a poem based on four different original poems. The analysis consisted of different literary devices, elements of the poet’s identity, and how the structure impacts the meaning or message. The poems from the poetry project had connections to the originals, like theme, structure, or topic.

Furthermore, during the slam there were some poems that were not included in the poetry projects. All of the various poems included different literary elements, such as similes, metaphors, and personification, which added depth to the stories these poems tell. Every poem presented had its own unique and special meaning that could be interpreted in numerous ways.

As a 9th grader, I also participated in the poetry slam. For my poem, I presented a sonnet based on William Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18. The poem I presented was in the same Sonnet format, which is a 14 line poem that has 10 syllables per line. The connection between the two poems was the element of nature and the outside world. At the slam I was nervous but excited, and once I got on the stage, I was able to showcase my poem with a sense of pride. Ultimately, the 2025 poetry slam was a memorable event where 9th graders, like me, were able to showcase their creativity while expressing themselves.
