A Smoothie Scandal
Outrage sweeps over Worcester Academy due to the not-so-smooth increase in smoothie prices at the Hilltopper Cafe. Last year, the Hilltopper Cafe smoothies were sold for $3.25. This year the prices have been raised to a whopping $5.25, and WA students are not berry happy.
One angry student exclaimed, “They charge us enough for tuition!” and another said, “I’m here on financial aid and I do work study; I can’t afford five dollar smoothies!” The staff of everyone’s favorite café says that they needed to raise the price to break even because they were losing money in past years, but students do not want to hear it. “Why take it out on the poor smoothies?! I could buy like two sandwiches for the price of one of those!”
When comparing prices to that of the neighboring Worcester private school, Bancroft, the reason for resentment becomes quite clear. The classic smoothies sold there, from Planet Smoothie, are sold for $4.19, which is approximately 25% less than those sold at WA. Do the kind staff and delicious tasting smoothies make up for the hefty price or do the prices not blend well with your wallet? Hopefully, the Hilltopper Cafe will get what they need this year to make next year a year of great smoothies with great prices.
