New AED Signs Around Campus

If you haven’t noticed, there are new signs around campus and in classrooms featuring an AED symbol; those featured in classrooms show where the nearest AED is in that building, while the other signs in buildings with arrows detail the directions to get to the AED.

For those who may not know, an AED is an automated external defibrillator used during CPR. The device is placed on a person’s bare chest and analyzes their heart rhythm. If needed, the AED can deliver a shock and re-establish an effective rhythm. While this is not an alternative to CPR, it is a part of the process to help save a person’s life.

This year, the freshman Health and Wellness class learned about CPR and First Aid, with many students in the grade having received their certificates in CPR and First Aid training. Students also realized that around campus, there were no directions to get to the AEDs or signs that pointed out where they were. The freshman then decided to create signs that informed people that there is an AED in the building, and directed how to get to it. There is a yellow sign in each building on campus, but only a few white signs in the doorways.

The class is also trying to get AEDs in more buildings around campus, such as Warner or the Megaron. The freshmen are also trying to get a map made with the locations for the AEDs and fire hydrants around campus. So, if you see signs around campus, take note of them; you could help save a person’s life one day.
