Worcester Academy Making a Difference

Over spring break, the Worcester Academy Habitat for Humanity club along with their leaders Mr. Scott and Ms. Sancomb, traveled to Hartsville, South Carolina with one goal in mind. Their goal was to work with the Darlington County Habitat for Humanity organization to build a house for a woman in need. The WA group worked with two men, Sam and Ben, who worked efficiently yet thoroughly. Though they were determined to stick to the building timeline, they found time for teaching moments along the way. For example, everyone had the opportunity to learn how to use a nail gun. They began their work on Monday, March 18th by prepping the crawl space and beginning the building of the floor. The next day, they arrived at the site and worked for many hours to finish the floor so that the next work day they could begin the difficult building of the framework. On Wednesday, the group took a break, travelling to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and visiting Broadway at the Beach to explore South Carolina and bond with each other outside the work site. Thursday and Friday were their final work days and they were able to successfully complete the walls and framework of the house so that the next crew could work on the roof when they arrived.

Emily Goodrich, a crew member, recalled her favorite and most memorable part of the trip was being able to see that all their hard work paid off when they saw the final, completed house on the last day. Overall she said the trip was incredible. Since she is a senior, she will be unable to attend the trip next year but she wishes she had one more opportunity to experience that feeling of accomplishment the crew received once they achieved their goal.
